About the Author
Stephen R. Turns received degrees in mechanical engineering from The Pennsylvania State University (B.S., 1970), Wayne State University (M.S., 1974), and the University of Wisconsin at Madison (Ph.D., 1979). He was a research engineer at General Motors Research Laboratories from 1970 to 1975. He joined the Penn State Faculty in 1979 and is currently Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Dr Turns teaches a wide variety of courses in the thermal sciences and has received several awards for teaching excellence at Penn State. He is an active combustion researcher, Publishing Widely, and is an active member of The Combustion Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Steve Turns makes Combustion easy

I think Steve has abilities to convey scientific ideas in a simple, easy to understand manner. His interaction with industrial clients, industrial applications and combustion equipment has given him an insight for explaining basics as applied to the real world. He also understands utilities of various combustion properties, parameters and correlations. He also knows how you can apply it for the maximim benefit for a given process. I recommend this book to any practicing engineer in the combustion field. Steve is a great communicator and a friend of combustion industry. At Air Liquide I have used this book to design burners, flames and combustion processes for steel, glass, chemical and process industries. Excellent Introduction to Combustion

I became acquainted with this book when it was used as one of several references for a graduate level mechanical engineering course in combustion. The book does an excellent job of explaining chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics - particularly if the reader has very little previous exposure to these topics.

I would have liked to see more solved example problems but this is probably a desire of any student when using an engineering text.

This book is well written and presents much complex material for the non-chemist in a clear and concise manner. Those working with internal combustion engines will find the materials on pollutant formation (Chapter 15) very useful, including the 78 end of chapter references.

The author's skepticism re Maciel's saintliness was born out by Vatican censure of the Legion Founder in May 2006 and by subsequent revelations and interventions. Leaving this mind-controlling organization after more than 23 years was a devastating experience but Lennon was not the first or the last to leave and survive. Recovery and healing have followed those harrowing years and he is thankful to the kindness of friends and strangers, ending with a big "Thank you" to them and to Life!

A Sincere Anti-testimony of the Legion of Christ

Those who grew up in the context of the Legion of Christ or Regnum Christi are familiar with the testimonies that were given by members. Here, J. Paul Lennon gives what turns out to be a testimony of a realistic experience of the Legion of Christ - not just the positive spin one got from the private vows or promises, - making it almost an anti-testimony. This relationship to the spoken word, along with the accesible and vibrant tone of the book, creates an open quality to the text, in which the author presents his experience, but allows the reader to make their own interpretation. However, the intensity and depth of the spiritual struggles Mr. Lennon discusses lead to an empathy that is constructive towards a reading of the work. In addition, I would say that I found the work to be very evocative in terms of bringing memories of my own consecrated life into my head, and re-thinking them. In "El Circulo del Poder y la Espiral de Silencio," one of the writers discusses the Myth of the Foundation of the Legion of Christ, and I believe that books like Paul Lennons are effective towards a therapeutic reconstruction of that myth, towards a healing for the exmembers, and possibly even current members.

AN EXTREMELY POWERFUL TESTIMONY!

This book contains a very powerful testimony of an amazing man on an amazing journey: before, during and after the Legion of Christ. As someone who has also had similar experiences with the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi movement, which is currently under review and reform, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain knowledge or understanding of these orders inside Catholicism. This insight comes from man who has experienced so much, learned and taught so much and helped so many who have left or tried to leave these orders--as well as their families. He has also sought to bring justice and healing to the masses - despite even being sued by the Legion at one time. I deeply honor and respect the work and testimony of this man who has helped many of us that have suffered though this crisis in many ways. More importantly, I respect his candor, sincerity and openness to discuss these issues even when he knew he would receive a great deal of turmoil, grief and criticism from even high ranked church officials. This man's honor, bravery and sense of decency are only few of the many qualities that I aspire to and hope to one day achieve. With the emancipation and solace I received from this book and the healing ministry of Mr. Lennon - I am that much closer!

More like a journal than a history.

This isn't a history of vaccines. it isn't even a scientific discussion of the pros and cons of vaccinating your kids. What is it, then? It's one persons reflections on their journey through the process of getting a kid their shots. Biss is more sympathetic to people who decide to skip immunizing their kids than some would like, but she does cover the negative side of that decision. It's well written and an easy read.

I can't give it 5 stars, because Biss could have given us a broader perspective on the history and science of vaccines than she did. Instead, she spends time reflecting on the burdens of 21st century parenting. So she should, but the percentage devoted to this is too high.

Perhaps my expectations were the problem. It seems everyone had this as a top ten book of the year. It was a good book, I'm glad I read it, I don't feel cheated and I would recommend it to you. But - it's not great. Very good. Not top ten great.

About the Author
Rich Grassel is Assistant Professor of Student Ministries at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA. With experience in student ministries for 16 years, Rich has worked in seven different denominations, in both large and small church contexts. He’s written for several magazines, including Youthworker Journal, and is a frequent speaker at Youth Specialties’ training events. Rich and his wife, Ruth, have two sons and reside in the Beaver Falls area.

The Dreaded Question It was the end of the day---and the end of a week of inspiring youth ministry seminars. We were a cheerful group of about a dozen youth workers, comfortably seated around the dinner table, all of differing ages, regions, denominations...and church sizes. Our conversation began innocently enough, sparked by what we'd heard from seminar leaders earlier in the day. But then one of the large church youth workers asked the dreaded question: 'So...how big is your youth ministry?' The large church youth workers responded immediately and with great enthusiasm, listing their expansive, active memberships, noting their state-of-the-art ministry resources, and sharing their awesome visions and strategies for additional growth. Feeling woefully inadequate, we small church youth workers grew increasingly quiet. Our confidence and cheerfulness evaporated. Later in the evening, a few of us vented in the hotel lounge (actually we were completely exasperated!). After some reflection, we noted a number of ways that our churches differed from large churches--- mainly in areas related to environment, expectations, and goals. And it became clear to our group: We need something different, because we are different! Not incompetent---just different. In other words, small church youth workers need a specialized approach to youth ministry. Location,Location, Location Why are there so many small churches? It's important to keep in mind that a huge percentage of small churches couldn't be anything but small. Why? Because there aren't enough people living around them! In vast stretches of our country, there simply isn't the population density for large churches---or the numbers to allow for huge youth ministry programs. Why does church location affect my ministry? There are small churches everywhere, from the big city to the farmland. Their geographies directly affect their special cultures and needs---their particular personalities, values, and traditions. So...everything from cultural and ethnic issues to transportation and travel can (and will) The midwestern city of Columbus, Ohio, has almost 660,000 residents; the entire state of Wyoming has fewer than 500,000 residents. have an enormous impact on how youth workers in small churches develop their programs. But before you begin ministry at your small church, you should be aware of some location-specific issues for churches in urban, inner-ring, suburban, small-town, and rural locations. Urban Locations Youth workers in small, urban churches face a number of issues that other small churches don't face. Be prepared for the following: 1. Limited finances---even less cash than the average small church. 2. Safety---crime and dangerous areas might affect meeting times, locations, and frequency. 3. Multi-ethnicity---not just African Americans and Latinos, but also Europeans, Southeast Asians, Russians...in short, every nationality! 4. Acute family problems---young single mothers, absentee fathers, and often grandparents and other family members as guardians. 5. Limited mobility---public transportation might be students' only way to youth group activities. 6. Significant poverty---many single mothers struggle to provide, and fathers might be out of work. 7. Poor health---often families can't afford medical assistance. 8. Violence---for inner-city kids, it's a daily concern, and they may be afraid to attend youth group events because of it. (Between 7 and 9 p.m. in the summer can be the most dangerous time to hold youth group meetings in the inner-city.) 9. Fear of teenagers---older people in the community might suspect their young neighbors are 'always up to no good.' 10. Dilapidated buildings, limited space and out-of-date facilities---the church sanctuary might be the only decent meeting room available to you. 11. High student turnover---youth group kids may not stick around because of their parents' employment situations or other family problems. If you plan to do youth ministry in a small, urban church, these sorts of issues must factor into the way you structure your programs. Kids in inner-city churches are aware of these issues, and if they and the congregation realize you're aware, too, you'll eliminate at least one hurdle. Inner-Ring Locations The 'inner ring' is positioned between suburban and urban areas and is often made up of older neighborhoods. The churches here are usually older, too. Often these churches grow slowly and don't attract new families. It's not uncommon for them to have a mix of blue- and white-collar workers. Generally, youth workers in small, inner-ring churches will face these issues: 1. Competition from larger churches with aggressive outreach programs---in small areas, the word about good programs gets around pretty quick! 2. Transportation problems---rush-hour traffic and bad weather can dissuade students who have to travel more than 20 minutes to youth group events. 'In urban churches, you might have to deal with gang-related issues. If you don't have experience dealing with gangs, don't attempt it without help from very experienced people. (And even if you do have expertise---seek help anyway!) There are ministries established specifically to deal with gang members. 'Try starting youth group meetings at 7 or 7:30 on weeknights to avoid traffic tie-ups. Consider an after-school program if you live near a school. 'Obtain athletic and activity schedules from school districts rep-resented in your youth group. Plan all activities well in advance, balancing them between school calendars, your church's schedule, and ministry opportunities.' 3. School and neighborhood loyalty---kids from rival schools and areas may not want to hang out with your kids (this can apply to adults, too!). 4. Financial difficulties---inner-ring families on fixed incomes usually don't have a lot of discretionary cash. 5. Denominational loyalty---adults in various congregations, particulary those in leadership, are often dedicated to carrying on their families' denominational traditions...and are suspicious of others. Suburban Locations Of all the small churches, suburban congregations tend to have the easiest access to materials and leadership. In addition, the members of these churches are typically young, white-collar workers who are educated and business-minded. Youth workers in small suburban churches should be prepared for the following issues: 1. Turnover in student population---parents often move because of transfers and promotions. 2. Education---parents expect their kids to go to college, and most kids expect the same. 3. Mobility of students---they or their friends typically own cars. 4. Social sophistication---students are concerned about their social status and are introduced to social events early.

More of a jab at small churches, approaches won't work.

I was really disappointed. The author is obviously qualified, but it is interesting that he has been involved in so many denomonations (7) in his own youth ministry. I sense that he has had bad experiences with small churches and has unresolved issues. There are many jabs at them throughout the first half of the book. The last parts of the book consist of "approaches" that will not work in small churches for reasons given in the first half of the book. One of the three main approaches requires that youth be divided into groups of 6 to 8 with similar interests and of the same sex. Another requires a cast of leaders with very specific roles and qualifications. A much better book is "Youth Ministry in Small Churches" by Rick Chromey. It is a very positive book written with the small church in mind, and with some ideas that are really geared toward a church with only two to a dozen or so high-schoolers.

Small Church Youth Worker? Read This Book!

Speaking as a youth ministry veteran of a little more than 12 years, mostly in a small church setting in positions ranging from volunteer to full-time paid, I strongly suggest that youth workers (and pastors) read this excellent introduction to youth ministry in the small congregation. Grassel has a passion for small church ministry (along with many years experience)and has finally given us a book that speaks to that context from within that context. Even those who work within larger settings (which are really a minority in this nation) will learn a lot as they strive to work in partnership with other youth leaders.

This is by no means an exhaustive work, but it provides an excellent framework with a lot of helpful ideas for those of us striving to simply be faithful examples for and teachers of teenagers - people who are not concerned with numbers as much as they are about simply being Jesus to a generation.

In this new book Dr.St.Just expands and makes a critical contribution to not only the study of social trauma but to a more general wisdom as well. Exploring the nature of time itself, she brilliantly describes how historical forces diminish our possibilities of peace and reconcilliation.

I am excited to recommend this book for those who would like to more comprehensively understand and more clearly see the possibilities of deep resolution not only of what is occurring within our own psyches but also in the different levels of the worlds we inhabit.

fast and easy reading on complex and deep dynamics.......

That are rarely addressed in our culture. How is it the the Japanese, a country devastated by US nuclear bombs, could be persuaded to build 48+ nuclear reactors in an earthquake vulnerable area? Though I never thought about it until I read it in the pages of this book, the answer to that question is worthy of pursuit and can explain a lot about what happens in our world. Answering that question completely will lead you to many books and thoughtful analysis, but the question was raised by Angwynn St Just, and the answer deserves to be recognized, particularly by those who are trying slow the devastation seen daily on our tv news. I recommend all St Just's books, we all need help and each other to maintain Relative Balance in an Unstable World.
