About the Author
Marvin L. Krier Mich is Director of Social Policy at the Catholic Family Center, a regional office of Catholic Charities in Rochester. He is also president of the Greater Rochester Community of Churches. In addition to the original The Challenge and Spirituality of Catholic Social Teaching (2005), his books include Catholic Social Teaching and Movements (1998) and, as co-author, St. Francis and the Sultan: Catholics and Muslims Working Together for the Common Good (Orbis, 2011).

This is the best overview and summary of CST I've read. It is a great introductory book for those seeking to understand and apply CST in their ministries. I will use it when I teach classes on CST. Thanks.

this is heresy!

Many Americans believe we are at a crossroads in our country where those on the left who call themselves “progressives” are competing with those on the right who are called conservatives. I believe Catholicism is playing a very important role in the debate. Unfortunately, in my view, Catholics are being persuaded to believe that “progressivism” has it correct--that a person is entitled to rights to have a job, right to have a home, right to have health insurance, a right to have an abortion any time they wish in the reproductive cycle and a right to demonize and call racist anyone who disagrees with them.
A current example of Catholic misdirection can be seen in the program “Just Faith” which had been promoted at St. Therese of Carmel and at other parishes across the country. The Challenge and Spirituality of Catholic Social Teaching by Marvin Krier (no imprimatur) is a book presenting the central theme of the program. The book’s main theme is support for and in defense of environmentalism. The author quotes several sources agreeing to the concept that all God’s creativity is equal, i.e. he refutes Genesis where man has “dominion…over all the earth”. The author espouses the idea that man is no better in God’s eyes than a tree or a rose. This is the prime rationale for everything that follows in the book. It is also the most anti-Catholic argument in the book. If you believe this argument, as most environmentalists do, you are set-up to accept everything that follows. What follows is the supposition that government is ‘god’. All the world’s problems can be solved by effective governance.
However, to get to that conclusion the author poses that individualism and capitalism are the two biggest evils in the world. The author believes Pope John Paul II would “consider consumerism more of an insidious enemy of Christianity than communism of the Soviet System”. Why, because “Communism is explicitly anti religious where materialism and consumerism are more subtle enemies of gospel values”. This is failed logic.
The author preaches liberation theology- the view that white supremacy abuses the resources of the earth through consumption. By this activity they conclude that the idea of individualism and property rights are not supported by Jesus in the bible. More specifically the author repeatedly promotes collectivism, solidarity and community. One of his chief goals is to convince “the pro-life community to broaden their understanding of life issues to include protecting the environment”. He asks to “preach salvation as healing and rescue for the whole world rather than as solely an individual relationship with God”.
The book is both anti Catholic and anti American. It is Anti Catholic because it ignores the special relationship between God and man. The author wants us to ‘love creation; as much as we ‘love thy neighbor’. He presents the idea that humanity is gendered in order that human beings may be driven into relationships with one another (so much for procreation). He really describes this ‘companionship’ as a code word for collectivism and anti-individualism. He writes “The natural world is not intended for domination and subjugation by humans, but for companionship”. He says “This discovery that every part of creation is a sacrament of God’s love is the beginning of a great reverence for creation”.

"Challenge" is a scholarly book and it certainly does make one think.
I was not inspired by it, but I learned one thing --
I wanted inspiration. For that I read "Cloud of Witnesses" and "Tattoos on the Heart." They were wonderfully easy to read and VERY inspiring!
