Chapter 3 covers the regulation of protein function, containing concise descriptions of all the regulatory mechanisms that operate on proteins, from pH to phosphorylation, with several sections on protein switches based on nucleotide hydrolysis. Chapter 4 introduces the principles whereby structure and function are deduced from sequence, with illustrative examples. The final chapter addresses how data on protein structure is gathered, interpreted, and presented.

About the Author
Gregory A Petsko studied chemistry and classics as an undergraduate at Princeton University before going to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar to work for his PhD with David Phillips. He then pursued his interest in the mechanism of enzyme catalysis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he taught courses in chemistry and detective fiction, before moving to Brandeis where he is currently Director of the Rosenstiel Center and has extended his research interests to include the use of yeast genetics to study the unfolded protein response pathway, and the mechanism of action of the ABC transporter proteins. Dagmar Ringe graduated in chemistry from Barnard College, Columbia, and took her PhD in bioorganic chemistry from Boston University. She then pursued her research interest in the study of enzyme catalysis by X-ray crystallography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before moving to Brandeis where she is Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry and where the principal focus of her research is on structure-function relationships in enzymes of particular industrial and pharmaceutical importance.

Quality and content of the book.

Generally,the book is excellent and the information is condensed in a simple language which can be understood easily. I also liked the proteins cartoons, the protein data bank number,fantastic! In additions, the book have links,words or terms defination and further references which proves to be helpful.

Less dry than usual, good reference

This is a good reference that is written in a less dry style than most textbooks, which appears to happen once you get to graduate level textbooks. It is a good book for biochemists and those who use biochemistry; I read this book to develop an understanding of my techniques involving antibodies and target proteins.

I recommend skimming through a copy before you buy, to determine if you will benefit from it (it may be too specialized for some, and some chemistry background is very helpful).

Inadequate as an introductory philosophy text

"Roots of Wisdom" is supposed to function as an introductory philosophy text. Such texts should present the most important issues in philosophy in a clear, coherent, and easy-to-understand fashion, while at the same time giving the student an appreciation of the history of philosophy as well as the tools to learn how to reason philosophically. During my three decades of teaching philosophy, I have come across a number of texts that accomplish this goal. Sad to say, "Roots of Wisdom" fails in this endeavor.

It's not that its author, Helen Buss Mitchell, doesn't try. The text discusses the various areas of philosophy (theory of knowledge, ethics, metaphysics, political philosophy, etc.), talks about some of the main figures in the history of philosophy, and attempts to show the reader how to reason in a philosophical fashion. However, the attempt to integrate these falls flat. Instead of a tapestry, we have a collection of random pieces of cloth. As a result, the format of this book is both confusing and confused. Moreover, although the book is intended for introductory students, the prose frequently becomes turgid and boring. Delving into esoterica often obscures the more important issues. This is not what one wants in an introductory text.

Helpful, but schnell?

I've got mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, there were some tips that did help me on my first trip to Germany for business. On the other hand, don't fall for the promise in the title. I guess there's no harm in a little puffery. Just don't expect to really have a grasp of the basics of the language by reading this book. So, if you are just looking for a book to open the door to the language a crack and possibly help with reading signs, this might be a good choice. If you want more, then keep looking...schnell!

Pocket size primer - just what it says it is

This is a book for those who want to take one step further than a phrase book, and learn something about the basics of the German language. It provides the basic grammer rules, some useful phrases, and some basic vocabulary. I got it because it's the size of a thin paperback, and I wanted to develop an understanding of the language. I'm pleased with it, and if you're starting from scratch and want a book to travel with you, you can't beat it for being compact, useful, and at a good price point.

Its a great introduction to a awesome framework. I loved the book and I also loved the framework. This book provides good introduction and goes in depth as well.

Only criticism I have is that this book did not talk about how to build Cascading apps using Maven, Gradle etc. This is a really important step when learning any jvm language technology these days.

I am new to "Big Data" so I enjoyed getting a functional understanding of Hadoop's overall structure in Chapter 1. Then each chapter helped build on the previous knowledge, and I found that a logical way to go. I was especially impressed when I got to chapter 8 which walked through a real life project from start to finish. The links to additional information, source code, utilities, libraries, and other content is very useful.

I don't like this adaptation because it is not narrated by Scout. That's part of the charm of the novel, a young girl's perspective on these important events. And this stage version doesn't capture it.

Excellent adaptation, although I wish Sergel wasn't so in love with the idea of making the play's intermission the same as the trial's recess, as it makes it unnecessarily difficult to switch from the town set to the courtroom, something which, had he been willing to "kill his darlings," could have been done during the intermission.
