This book is for Piano players, and music teachers. Does not cover the Violin, does not cover Sonatas written for other instruments very well. As usual, too much Beethovan, and not much of any one else. Way to dependant on Piano music. Bach wrote Sonata's for Violin long before Beethovan was born. And Sonatas by Paganini, and the rest of the Italian Violin composers are almost entirely ignored. If you want to learn about the Piano and Beethovan, buy it. I am still looking for what I want in the subject matter.

Concise helpful and practical with fully worked examples

I acquired this book many years ago, but never read it. (Incidentally, I remember once meeting Mike Fryer briefly too, but that was on a separate occasion, also a very long time ago.) Recently I needed to re-learn/remember how to do linear programming so I could solve an elementary bit of game theory, and remembered this book. It was pitched exactly right! It starts at the beginning and gives a basic but reasonably complete understanding of the practical aspects of solving elementary problems, without getting bogged down. All the examples are worked through, with a complete set of answers to all of the exercises and a few more occasional pointers added as required, - having all of the answers explained in this way was very helpful for working alone. The book makes no pretence of giving a complete theory, and that was OK because I just wanted to know how to do the basics, which is just what the text offers by staying practical and solving problems illustrating various situations that can arise. The necessary bits of basic theory that are explained are usually quite clear, there were only a couple of places where the description seemed a bit lacking and I had to stop and puzzle out for myself just what was going on, and then add a few lines of pencilled explanation in the margin to help myself out the next time round. (That will be when I've forgotten again, and have to look it up once more.)

The book is a first edition from 1978, thirty-five years ago now, and I guess there weren't any more. As such I found it does contain the usual quota of typographical errors, perhaps at least one every other page on average. None of these significantly detracted from the presented material, and in fact spotting and correcting these typos actually helped me in working through the text and the exercises.

In summary: does what the book's title says on the tin, as they say. Succeeds in giving the reader a practical problem solving approach. I'm very pleased to have the book and to have worked through it. And, I was able afterwards to solve my little game theory puzzle that first prompted me to pick the book up. Recommended!

Xi Shi: our heroine of this tale was a young and beautiful silk yarn washer in Yue Kingdom. She and Fan Li met by chance on the bank of a stream, and they fell in love despite the vast difference in their stations. After their country was conquered by the Wu Kingdom and facing being annexed; Fan Li persuaded Xi Shi to sacrifice their love and personal happiness, for the sake of king and country. Xi Shi agreed to his proposal, and entered the Wu King's Inner Court, to endure a precarious and sensual existence for many years. She was inadvertently caught between the conflicts of these two kingdoms, and the two powerful men who loved her. Throughout history, Xi Shi had been alternately lauded as a savior of her people, or maligned as a fox spirit with base morals. She was like a lotus blossom rising out of muddy water, yet retained its purity! Note: Xi Shi was one of the four legendary beauties in Chinese history. Out of four of them, the author decided to write Xi Shi's fascinating story; because she greatly admired this historical woman's courage and resolution: in an age when the Chinese society regarded its women as mere chattels.

Teresa Ng is a Chinese/American born in Hong Kong and educated in the United States. Prior to retirement, she had twenty-three years of a career in Insurance Underwriting and also ten years part-time position in a county library. Currently, she and her husband are making their home in a beautiful senior community in Kensington, Maryland. The Ng's are blessed with three children and six grandchildren. About ten years ago, while on the job in the library, Teresa was inspired by the abundance of Chinese cultural reading materials there. She started writing and illustrating books mostly based upon the culture, legends, and wisdom of ancient China. Today, Teresa is dividing her time in homemaking, painting and participating in the "Creative Writing" program inside her vibrant senior community. A tale of great beauty and sacrifice in Ancient China

It is a pity that this novel isn't more popular. I guess there is a very very small market for historical fiction about ancient China. However, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The story follows that of Xi Shi, one of the four legendary Beauties of China. Players of Dynasty Warriors etc, may recognize the name of another of the Four Beauties - Diao Chan. But this book is strictly of Xi Shi. The plot is very exciting and fast paced. During a politically chaotic period when China was still in many kingdoms, the Kingdom of Yue was defeated by the neighboring Kingdom of Wu. The King of Yue's advisor Fan Li, is sent on a mission to find the most beautiful women in China to train and offer to the enemy, in hopes that they will distract King Fuchai of Wu, while Yue tried to recuperate its losses. In a sad twist of fate, Fan Li's true love and bethrothed, Xi Shi, is selected as one of the tribute concubines. Torn between duty and love, Fan Li and Xi Shi's story is one of the most romantic historical legends in China. I felt very lucky to find this English version.

Teresa Ng has a beautiful gift for story telling

Teresa Ng has a beautiful gift for story telling. I enjoyed the progression of the story told from the two protagonists. It was a wonderful trip in ancient China, its customs and settings.

However, as mentioned in a previous review, the book needs serious editing. At the beginning of the book, before the prologue and the chapter listing, there’s a note that for the Second Edition: 2013 ‘’The author has addressed some minor errors in the original text, which will not affect the story content of Mud Blossom.’’ I don’t know which errors were addressed as the book is left with so many errors that the reading is, at times, quite difficult.

I don’t mind the occasional typo, even the best editor is human. However, the constant misuse of punctuation makes it necessary to read a sentence 2-3 times to make sense of it. Unfortunately, and like so many people, Teresa Ng seems to think that punctuation is some kind of decoration to be used randomly. It is not. Punctuation can completely change the meaning or remove all meaning in a sentence. We see semi-colons instead of comas and commas where there shouldn’t be any.

There is also frequent confusion between the present and past tense of verbs and participles. I often had to ‘’rewrite’’ a sentence in my mind to make sense of it before reading the next one. Some words also needed ‘’rewriting’’ such as ‘’his exalted statue’’ which should have been ‘’his exalted status’’ or ‘’bought’’ instead of ‘’brought’’, etc.

Am I glad I read this book? Yes, I am. Would I read another book from this author? Probably not. I read to learn and for pleasure. I certainly learned a lot but much of the reading pleasure was taken away by the constant need to mentally edit as I was reading, not as a grammar purist but simply to make sense of the sentences.

Finally, a note to Teresa Ng: You have a beautiful gift for story telling and you obviously researched your subject well. In my humble opinion, you have the potential to become another Pearl S. Buck (one of my favorite authors.) But please, please invest some time and money in professional editing before presenting your books to the public. Punctuation, verb tense and the correct words do matter a lot and online spelling and grammar check is not sufficient. I feel Mud Blossom is like a beautiful child fed just enough to keep him alive but not enough to thrive and reach his full potential.

Must read for those looking to get the best out of themselves, their investments and life overall

Take a Financial Leap is the best book I have read on understanding how to identify, plan and realise your goals. I've read many books in this genre, but this is the first time I have got through a book like this and taken action. I now have a clear set of goals in my personal, career and financial life.

Pete's book consolidates the available wisdom in a simple and actionable guide, by someone who has done it before. The reader is only required to undertake a couple of activities, but these are simple to do and crucial in helping to set the foundations for the goals you would like to achieve. Once completed I was inspired by the results to take further action to outline and plan the steps to reach those goals. This is the first book I have come across that made this an easy process to do.

Pete writes in a personable style, which is a pleasure to read, with the key learning points clearly visible throughout the text. Best of all, it is related in a humble way, and at no point do you feel like he is showing off. You feel as though you are talking to a good friend who is providing sound advice. It helped that I strongly identified with his own background, but the rules will apply to anyone looking to get on the right track personally and financially.

I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to come across a number of successful people who have built great personal lives and also have considerable wealth. Pete has put into words the elements that allowed those people to achieve what they have. I liked it so much I ordered another seven copies which I gave out to family and friends over Christmas and am powering through his previous book Get a Financial Grip.

One of the Source Books of the Mormon Faith

I personally do feel that there is reason to question the veracity of the Books of Mormon. There is apparently a quote from Shakespeare in one of his writings, even though he claims to have gotten them from Egyptian tablets which predate Shakespeare. There also seem to be some things taken from the Scottish Rite Masons. There are a few other odd inconsistencies like this, but then the regular Bible has its share of them too. For the Faithful, it is a must have book. For those who are not, there is some value in studying this religion, because we have its history very well documented about how a religion came into being over time. Whoever Joseph Smith was, he created a large following that exists to this day. What I find interesting is that a friend showed a passage in this particular book where Joseph Smith tells his followers to be vegetarian and if they cannot do this, then to eat as little meat as possible. I could not find the reference to post here, but it could be relevant for Mormon practice. I still give the book five stars, because it is well organized and well printed, has a subject index (though it did not help me find the verse I mentioned above). It reads much like the King James Bible.

Really bad fiction..a compilation of a conman's "revelations" from God

Joseph Smith must have thought himself to be quite the prophet. This book is a compilation of this conman's 'revelations' from God.

The revelations are all self-serving, ranging from heavenly messages giving the dimensions of a home his followers were to build for him to a revelation telling him to live polygamy.

This book details over a hundred revelations given to him from God. What a joke. The book is pretty boring, but there are parts that will make you burst out laughing at the ridiculous, outrageous lies he tells his followers as he shines in his free-form revelations.

A must have for every Mormons, I am sure. But for the casual reader, I would suggest you have some strong coffee nearby as this book can put you to sleep quickly.

If you are looking for a good book on mormonism, this is not it. I would suggest An Insider's View of Mormon Origins by Grant Palmer.

Substantial chapters relate the important events and offer perspective on the trends that led to occurrences in the late 20th century. Three chapters are devoted to social and cultural themes. One chapter highlights achievements in baseball, football, basketball, track and field, tennis, and golf. While individual sports figures aren't indexed, some are mentioned in the limited year-by-year chronology. Lindop's coverage is meatier than Richard B. Stolley's in The American Dream: The 50s (Time-Life, 1999) and focuses less on popular culture than Stuart A. Kallen's The 1950s (Lucent, 1998). While not as generously illustrated as those two volumes, Lindop's book offers a solid, serious discussion in a relatively appealing package.

Early chapters discuss the Korean War and the political upheaval that escalated to world crisis because of the atomic bomb. These ideas segue into a section on the Red Scare, with particular attention paid to the Rosenberg trial and McCarthyism. Later chapters delve into lighter but no less compelling pop culture topics, including the pervasive influence of television, the advent of rock and roll, and the globalization of American sports. Well-selected photographs illustrate both the era's angst (families running toward bomb shelters, Little Rock desegregation) and innocence (a bubbly Mamie Eisenhower trying on 3-D glasses, crew-cut college students piling onto a motorbike).
