Field Mice: Memoirs of A Migrant Child, by Mrs. Emma Gonzalez

Emma's memories from age 5 to 15 allow us to share the ups and downs, the joys, the sadness, of the migrant life in the U.S. in late 1950s and 60s, through the eyes of a child. Her gifted use of imagery allows us to experience snippets of her life. Her later in life writing career was inspired by the Blessed Mother Teresa who guided her to write. American born Emma Gonzalez was trapped in the nomadic lifestyle which spiraled downward economically during those ten years. She was dragged from Ovid, Colorado to Texas. Ironically, her stability was in Ovid where her teachers, classmates, and the town "adopted" this lost migrant kid. Moving was a way of life for her naturalized migrant American family. Emma tells in short, vivid vignettes of her struggles to overcome the pressures to keep her as insignificant as the field mice she played with to persevere, educate herself, to succeed in multiple business ventures, finally discovering her calling in the criminal justice system advocating and assisting victims of crime. The only child of the later in life marriage, decades younger than her half siblings, Emma was an after thought, an encumbrance, something to be left at the edge of the field all day and picked up they went home. Yet, Emma had hope, symbolized by the wearing of her pearls, she focusing on a better life. She learned "your family doesn't provide a better life for you; you have to go out and make it yourself." These vignettes illustrate her strength of character, her determination for HER life. She used the family's Green Stamps, not for toys nor games, but for books. From these books she learned about other countries that were far beyond her reach. A whole world existed beyond the migrant life. She developed a sense of adventure and now loves to travel to these far off places. Emma's joy in her life is her husband and family. IN HER NEXT BOOK, "PATHS OF PEARLS", Emma writes about her life after migrating. From age 15 she struggled to shoulder the financial burdens after her father's death, to support her mother and herself, while pursuing her education. After 50 years, she travelled to Ovid, Colorado to revisit her childhood places and reunited with childhood friends and neighbors. She will share stories of other migrant children that overcame similar obstacles.

Migrant life vividly portrayed.
By Veracity
This book allows you to share the simple ups and downs of a young girl whose imagination allowed her to endure the hardships of migrant life. The descriptions are so vivid you can see (and occasionally smell) what her life was like. Luckily, she realized that education was the way out and clung to the opportunities to leave the nomadic life that was her childhood. People with migrants in their ancestry will appreciate this book as Emma was dragged from Texas, to Colorado and back and even to California to search for her father's Shangrila. Even though it is many short snapshots of little Emma's life, it is difficult to stop reading, wondering what will happen to Emma next.

Great Introductory Text
By T. Dahlstrom
If you are interested in the broad spectrum of public administration, this is a great book to start with. It covers what public administration is, politics and public policy, government management and reinvention, intergovernmental relations, ethics, org theory and OB, leadership, finance and HR, and program evaluation, among others. It also has case studies and review questions for each chapter and other helful resources. Yet, probably the best thing is that it is written in a very readable way. This text would be good for Bachelors or Masters students, especially with its key concepts, bibliography, recommended books and related websites. I enjoyed it in a Masters class, and can recommend it.

Excellent undergrad text
By The Prof
I've taught an undergrad course in Public Administration four times, and have used the Shafritz book every time. It is an excellent introduction for undergrads because it so well written and easy to read. The stories are useful, the illustrations helpful. It covers a broad range of topics, both theoretical and practical.

I highly recommend the book to anyone teaching a course in public administration, though it's not just for casual reading.

Awful
By Matthew Case
This book was terrible. In some places it is well-written and interesting but very rarely does it provide insight into what public administrators actually do. It seems the authors were more interesting in presenting the history of public administration and therefore the title, "History of Public Administration" might have been more apt. Also, the text is going into 8th edition this year and as such I am entitled to zero dollars back on my "investment". What a scam! The college professors who routinely use textbooks such as this one ought to consider the ethical ramifications of doing so as they are charging their students in excess of one hundred dollars to read dreck and then planning a course alongside inferior material.

Simply put, there are many other textbooks out there that better describe what public administration is and how it differs from business administration, nonprofit administration, etc. However, if I were teaching a course on public administration I doubt I'd use a textbook at all, preferring to use historical documents and journal articles. This sort of "learning" needs to stop if MPA/MPP programs are to gain traction.

As to the actual text of the book, there's a lot of bloviating and meandering text that doesn't really make for interesting reading; its the sort of reading you'd find in say, a [badly written] blog. I could go into more detail but I won't, I will say though that I would never use this textbook as a teaching tool in my own classroom.

Never fear another negotiation!

Powerhouse entertainment lawyer and negotiating guru Michael Donaldson has distilled a lifetime of negotiating success into a simple, straightforward plan to get you what you want, when you want it-without the angst.

If you've ever been uncertain before a negotiation, felt beaten up after, or thought you could have and should have negotiated better, Fearless Negotiating shows you, step by step, how to erase your fears and preconceptions and tap into the master negotiator that lives within you. This short and compelling guide is an essential companion to achieving more rewarding, meaningful, and mutually satisfying business and personal relationships and outcomes.

Donaldson introduces his remarkably effective Wish-Want-Walk Method, which has been successfully presented in seminars around the world:

  • WISH-set a goal for the negotiation
  • WANT-know where the market is most likely to push the results
  • WALK-draw the line that you will not cross

“Wish, Want, Walk” will be your guide, telling you when to start the bidding, when to quit while you're ahead, and when to cut your losses. Establishing these three points beforehand will make you more comfortable at the negotiating table, reduce your stress, and even help you predict the likely outcome.

Donaldson also shows you how to make the most of your time between creating your Wish-Want-Walk plan and when you go into the negotiating session. He helps you get in touch with your inner, natural-born negotiator, making it easier to make opening offers, bargain with confidence, and seal the deal you want.

This Book Makes One Good Point
By Mark W. Kenczyk
Fearless Negotiating by Michael Donaldson is a fairly one-dimensional book on the topic of negotiating and may have very little practical benefits to those in the business world that buy and sell for a living. As a seasoned negotiator, I recognize the "Wish-Want-Walk" method as nothing more than a negotaitor's Opening Position, Goal, and Bottom Line -- what is commonly know as the negotiation bracket. While I agree that defining one's wish-want-walk is critical to the success of any negotiation, this single aspect is over dramatized at the expense of many other crticial strategies and tactics that are critical to achieving success when negotiating.

Negotiating Light without Many Insights
By Paul LaFontaine
Having read several books on negotiating I was disappointed in Donaldson's book. It feels ghost written and assembled for airport business book sections. As a negotiator it is helpful to glean a few useful techniques from book on the subject. In this book there was nothing that caught the attention.

The three part Wish - Want - Walk advice that dominates the book is a helpful three step device, but there is much more to the discpline than is presented here. Many other elements of negotiation, from tactics to goal closing are skimmed over.

Wish-Want-Walk WORKS!
By Kim Gazecki
Fearless Negotiating will help you in all aspects of your business and even your relationships. In my line of work, filmmaking and distribution, I've found the easy-to-apply Wish-Want-Walk method to be perfect for everything from dealing with networks and distributors to hiring a cameraperson. I had no idea that negotiating skills and strategies could be applied across the board like this. I'm grateful to be able to have this disarmingly simple but profound Wish-Want-Walk approach to use from now on. I had the pleasure of attending an afternoon seminar with author Michael Donaldson a few weeks ago and found him to be a gentle master of negotiating and a terrific teacher. This book is highly recommended for anyone who has to find a point of agreement with another human being -- so, basically everyone!

What Is Data Science?, by Mike Loukides

We've all heard it: according to Hal Varian, statistics is the next sexy job. Five years ago, in What is Web 2.0, Tim O'Reilly said that "data is the next Intel Inside." But what does that statement mean? Why do we suddenly care about statistics and about data? This report examines the many sides of data science -- the technologies, the companies and the unique skill sets. The web is full of "data-driven apps." Almost any e-commerce application is a data-driven application. There's a database behind a web front end, and middleware that talks to a number of other databases and data services (credit card processing companies, banks, and so on). But merely using data isn't really what we mean by "data science." A data application acquires its value from the data itself, and creates more data as a result. It's not just an application with data; it's a data product. Data science enables the creation of data products.

Though its organization was somewhat convoluted, I found much poignant information there. I did also find a lot of spelling and syntax errors, which somewhat distracted from its message.

The Nature of Nature: Examining the Role of Naturalism in Science, by Bruce Gordon, William Dembski

The intellectual and cultural battles now raging over theism and atheism, conservatism and secular progressivism, dualism and monism, realism and antirealism, and transcendent reality versus material reality extend even into the scientific disciplines. This stunning new volume captures this titanic clash of worldviews among those who have thought most deeply about the nature of science and of the universe itself.

Unmatched in its breadth and scope, The Nature of Nature brings together some of the most influential scientists, scholars, and public intellectuals—including three Nobel laureates—across a wide spectrum of disciplines and schools of thought. Here they grapple with a perennial question that has been made all the more pressing by recent advances in the natural sciences: Is the fundamental explanatory principle of the universe, life, and self-conscious awareness to be found in inanimate matter or immaterial mind? The answers found in this book have profound implications for what it means to do science, what it means to be human, and what the future holds for all of us.

The Biggest Questions in Science and Life
By Jonathan Bartlett
If Francis Crick, William Dembski, Michael Ruse, Alan Guth, Roger Penrose, Howard Van Till, and all their friends all got together for a discussion, what would they talk about? No need to speculate - this book, The Nature of Nature, contains papers from all of these top scholars as well as many others. Just listing out the big names in science that contributed to this volume would be a more than adequate review.

It turns out that all of these scholars are focused on the "big questions" of life - where did we come from? what is the nature of consciousness? what is the nature of ethics? what is the nature of nature itself?

While these questions all sound philosophical, this book focuses on scientific approaches to each question. The book, at over 900 pages, is impossible to summarize in such a short review. However, I will say that on every question, there are multiple perspectives offered, giving the reader a broad view of the ways which each question can be approached.

For instance, on the nature of the mind, there are essays from Nancey Murphy, who gives an explanation as to how the mind can function as a purely physical entity, John Tooby, who provides an evolutionary explanation of the mind's organization, and Henry Stapp, who argues for a dualism between the mind and the brain coordinated at the quantum level. Similar discussions are had about the origin of life, the origin of the universe, the the nature of mathematics, and the nature of nature itself.

I recommend this book to any person who wants to take a deep look at life's deepest questions. There are no shallow arguments here. If you are a scientist, a theologian, or an interested layperson, this volume provides a host of scholarly papers examining life's most meaningful questions from a number of directions.

Highly recommended
By The Professor
The Nature of Nature: Examining the Role of Naturalism in Science is a compendium of the leading scholars in the area of science and religion, including three Nobel laureates, who weigh in on the following question: is the universe self-existent, self-sufficient, and self-organizing, or is it instead organized by a reality that transcends space, time, matter, and energy? When the book came in the mail I was surprised at its mammoth size. It reminded me of Stephens Jay Gould's The structure of Evolutionary Theory book. The Nature of Nature has the same large page size and about as many pages as Gould's book. In contrast to Gould's book, The Nature book is more readable and I did not note any almost full page single sentences as Gould's book contains. As I leafed through The Nature I realized this is not a book that one would normally read straight through, so I selected chapters of interest, as most readers will likely do, in my case mostly those in the area of my graduate work, cell biology. The chapters by Drs Behe, Axe, Meyer, Rana and others reviewed some of their earlier work and responded to criticism. As a whole their chapters served as an excellent succinct summary of their main ideas and past publications. Axe's chapter on Protein folding helped inform me about the latest research in this critical area, one that I have not kept up much with since graduate school. The chapters by critics of Intelligent Design were, judging by the ones that I read, excellent selections that helped the reader understand both sides of the controversy over origins and Naturalism. The number of chapters on each side of the book's theme were close the equal, and the collection for this reason will be valuable no matter which side of the controversy one favors. Michael Shermer argued in his chapter that "experiment after experiment reveals the same answer: we [humans] are a fluke of nature, a quirk of evolution, a glorious contingency" (page 455). This conclusion was echoed in several other chapters. The friendly debate between Alvin Plantinga and his critics was a model of the best of a debate undertaken to focus on the issues and eschew personal attacks. Highly recommended and indispensable to understand the current cultural war between theists and naturalists.

FANTASTIC IN SCOPE AND THE QUALITY OF PARTICIPANTS
By Keith H. Bray
This book is derived from many a symposium on the same matter and it writes like a "who-is-who" especially in areas such as physics and quantum mechanics. The book is over 900-pages in length and I am still reading different essays contingent upon the section of specialty. There is some repetition here in that, although a respective essay fails to state that it is borrowed from previous writing or book, can be dismissed as repetition is a manner of habit for learning. Like the first reviewer, I confess that I have not completed the entire book. I had also wished that Don Page, Fr. Robert Spitzer, and John Sinclair had made contributions--the same goes for Susskind, Lederman, Brian Greene and Kip Thorne.

Weinberg's essay seemed somewhat disengaged and "Dawkin's-like" in spirit as someone of Weinberg's intellectual caliber could have written something that does not come off like he is bothered to even attend or deliver his paper. At a recent unnamed event, Weinberg did not know what the "M" in M-theory stood for although Ed Witten's intellectual acumen matches Weinberg's acumen (and perhaps surpasses it), and Weinberg was also oblivious to the fact that Paul Steinhardt himself had largely agreed that his updated "Cyclic Ekpyrotic Scenario" that deals with membranes (or "branes")) is not able to work. Weinberg not only appealed to the first Ekpryrotic Scenario (model) when Steinhardt recognized that the BVG theorem renders a cyclic universe past incomplete. (These embarrassing misstatements for such an intelligent man hearken back to Einstein's last days at Princeton).

The book is fantastic and a marked "purchase for personal library" for those who are engaged in these natters. There is much more to say, such as fine-tuning versus multiverse, the neo-Darwinian synthesis with design, cosmology versus cyclic models, pre-big bang scenarios, multidimensionality, the ontic foundation for morality (with an essay by Michael Ruse who is always a delight to read), and even the historian Ronald Numbers makes a contribution. For those that do not know these names, these guys are the cream-of-the crop, which is why you must purchase this book. If there are matters over your head, then I would suggest reading the chapters on cosmology in William Lane Craig's "Reasonable Faith," who happens to be another contributor along with Bill Dembski and Michael Behe.

The Boneshaker, by Kate Milford

After publishing a ghoulish article on how to make saltwater taffy in a haunted kitchen, accomplished screenwriter and playwright Kate Milford has shifted her talents toward books for young audiences. In Milford's first novel, 13-year-old Natalie knows there's something unnatural about Dr. Jake Limberleg when he comes into her father's bicycle-repair shop. But when Limberleg claims he can perform miraculous healings, Natalie begins to seriously doubt whether she's up to the challenge this potentially dangerous man presents.

Shivery Good!
By Kate Coombs
Natalie loves machines. She helps her mechanic father in his shop, repairing motorcars and bicycles and trying to build clockwork machines like a small flyer. It's 1914, and Arcane isn't an ordinary small town. The crossroads is a place of power, where the devil once battled an old musician for his soul and lost.

At least, that's the story Natalie's mother tells her, but is it true? As The Boneshaker progresses, we learn not only that the story is true, but that the uncanny Doctor Jake Limberleg's Nostrum Fair and Technological Medicine Show has something to do with demons, as well.

Natalie, whose biggest concern up till now has been her inability to ride the odd bicycle her father has rebuilt for her, the titular boneshaker, now has a whole new set of worries. With her friends, she begins to explore the eerie doctor's medicine show. What she discovers frightens her, but things get even worse when her brother and father decide to bring her ailing mother to the medicine show for treatment.

The author builds her story--and the suspense--beautifully, pulling readers deeper into Natalie's all-too-appropriate fears about Dr. Limberleg and the "paragons" who accompany him. Meanwhile, Natalie's continuing efforts to ride the boneshaker lead us to a final chase scene in which she must ride the bike on a wild night-time journey to save her town and everyone she loves.

Milford gives us fun details like the time Natalie tries to sell a single bee to the town's shopkeeper, along with curious details such as the miniature automata inside Dr. Limberleg's trailer or the way the front left wheel pops off of every vehicle that comes into Arcane through the crossroads. And the medicine show, a kind of carnival, is described nightmarishly well.

The characters here are as marvelously strange as the medicine show. We get to know Old Tom Guyot, the elderly black musician who challenged the devil and won; a devious drifter named Jack (whom you might recognize from folklore); a mysterious rich man who isn't quite human; and stalwart townspeople such as the pharmacist and Natalie's friends Alfred and Miranda.

Milford's work hints of magical realism and Alfred Hitchcock's subtle touch rather than today's scare-a-minute horror stories. A rich and shivery historical fantasy--or what I like to call rural fantasy--The Boneshaker will appeal to kids who are willing to take the time to watch fear unfold in increasingly unnerving detail.

Note for Worried Parents: In addition to mature themes relating to the serious illness of a parent, The Boneshaker features pacts with the devil and demonic horror elements. It's definitely creepy, which explains the publisher's suggested reading range of 10 and up.

The Teeth-Chattering Boneshaker
By Sunny Sewing Honeybee
Natalie has a mechanically-inclined father who keeps a marvelous bicycle workshop and has just restored a vintage bicycle for her. Too bad she can't figure out how to ride it! Together, they are attempting to bring a little automaton airplane to life. Natalie's mother has a remarkable storytelling ability that brings tales to life. And, so it seems at least, someone has just come to town who can bring things to life . . . without any effort at all.

Milford's unusual setting and characters all work together well to create a magically supernatural feel to the story. Arcane, the town's name, means "mysterious," and the nearby ghost town adds to that feel. The cast of characters in town, both visiting and normal residents, are incredibly complex, including former slave Tom, best known for making a bet with the devil. Natalie discovers that though the town seems very boring on the surface, it has hidden secrets. With the arrival of a "medicine man" and his unusual entourage to the seemingly quiet town, things start becoming really interesting . . . and more than a bit scary.

Why does the medicine man seem to single her out? Why does Natalie seem to be the only person who can tell something shady, and perhaps even downright evil, is going on? Is something really, or is she merely overreacting to things that can be explained? One of the most interesting--and unnerving!--aspects of this book is that you simply don't know one way or the other until about two-thirds of the way through the text. While I don't want to give away any of the plot, since this is the type of story where it's important that things are allowed to be revealed slowly, as a quick warning, there is content that sensitive readers may find overly scary or disturbing.

The beginning is a tad slow since it introduces the characters, rather than really attempting to draw you right in. However, hang in there--from there on, it's a bumpy and exciting ride on Natalie's Chesterlane Eidolon.

As good as Bradbury; maybe better
By Pop Bop
Sometimes the editorial reviews that head up these comment sections can be very snarky and dismissive. However, the two reviews that lead off for this book seem to be very much to the point. I was pleased to see that one of them referred to Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes". That is exactly what comes to mind while reading "Boneshaker". Sometimes Bradbury could get carried away and veer toward self-parody in his breathless descriptions, but "Boneshaker" seems more restrained, and builds more steadily and creepily to its conclusion.
The book also introduces a resourceful, sympathetic, aware, aqnd forthright female protagonist. Think of a character like Scout, from "To Kill a Mockingbird", and you'll have a sense of this character, overalls and all.
There are currently an awful lot of books coming out with magic in them, as well as dark versus light type themes, but many of them are sort of manic, with a great deal of exposition about their particular "hook", (alchemy, greek gods, egyptian gods, scandinavian gods, the circles of hell, and so on). Many of them are fun and worthy. But, it seems that "Boneshaker" has a special place in that list mainly because the conflict is built from the ground up on subtle, compelling and satisfying writing, and how nice it is to recommend a book as "well written".
