Realism, whether you like it or not...

I read most anything by Susan Johnson, although I don't like everything she writes. By far, the biggest reason that I read her is her ability to meld history and sex with wit and style. Outlaw, for instance, has some genuinely good writing and well-researched history.
Reading this book, however, was kind of a shock. You talk about spousal abuse... The heroine's first husband was a physically abusive demented religious zealot many decades her senior, her lover (the hero) turns out to be a psychologically abusive man who desires her (and her submission) obsessively. My initial reaction to this book was "ick."
Upon reflection, though, I have truly come to appreciate this book. It is in no way a typical romance story; if you are looking for "maltreated virginal heroine finds sappy romance with adoring lover" this book is NOT for you. But Johnson's hallmark is historical realism, and let's be honest, Tzarist Russia was not exactly a hotbed of women's rights.
I have hashed this out with friends who argue that romantic fiction is exatly that - not intended to be realistic. On the other hand, the "bad boy" figure in romance tends to be a neutered caricature: rake until he meets the perfect sex partner, then he's just as tame as can be. This book presents the hero as a true bad boy, atrocious ego and all. The scene where Nikki comes from a liason with a former mistress to a pregnant Alissa's bed is a perfect example of this - revolting to modern sensibilities, but probably not out of the norm for a Russian prince 250 years ago.
So, thank you Ms. Johnson for injecting a true note of reality - along with some great sex scenes - into the world of romance.

Dear readers , I love reading about bad boys, and there is no boy badder, than Nikki Kuzan! If you are softhearted and can't handle the drama that a bad boy is going to bring, then this book is not for you, but to all the others whose a little on the wild side, go an take a ride with Nikki Kuzan. It seems to me that Susan Johnson knows every women's fantasies. Nikki is not your average romance hero. He is the kind of hero you save for your naughty dreams. He is devastatingly sexy, hard to get, and every women wants him. Who does he want? (Alisa). He might not show it in the conventional way, but show it he does! Alisa is a wonderful and realistic heroine, because it doesn't matter what era we are living in, there will allways be women who rebels against there plight, and take a chance on something better. Put aside how wonderful Alisa and Nikky are, the story in itself was magnifecent. Susan Johnson captivates you with her writing. I was hooked from the first page. It took me one day to finish this book. Heroes like Nikki are the very reason I started reading historical romances and not contemporary. The men of that era were very dominant and so different from the men of today, but men like Nikky should be left for your fantasies, and I want to live out my fantasies in every book that I read! That is why I think Susan Johnson is such a refreshing author. She was bold enough to write a romance novel like this for all the people who wanted to read something more daring, and for that I am her biggest fan!

What's all the fuss about?

You would think, from Ms. Johnson's own apologia in the preface of this book, together with the reviews here on Amazon, that the plot and characters' behavior(s) in this novel made it the biggest Neanderthal throwback to the dark ages of romance novels ever.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Nikolai may not be the most evolved 19th century gentleman ever created, but he's a typical product of his time (fabulously wealthy, Russian, aristocrat). The heroine, Alisa, has spunk and speaks up against Nikki when he's just too obnoxious; she's not a wimp, just (again) a product of her time...Women were in the control of men during the 19th century, in all countries, and our latter-day freedoms were hard wins. As for the sensuality & "scenes", well, frankly, I've read books that poured it on much, much more raunchily than Ms. Johnson does here; it's all pretty basic! (That's a good thing, it's not a negative!) Having never read anything by Ms. Johnson before, I can say I enjoyed this novel and would read more by her; she's a good writer. I think the relationship between Nikki & Alisa was just "romantic" enough, considering the protagonists involved & the times they were living in, and the end, when Nikki finally comes around to confessing his love for Alisa, is super.

About the Author
Simon LeVay, Ph.D. is a British-born neuroscientist turned science writer and teacher. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and has taught at Harvard, the University of California, and Stanford University, USA. LeVay has authored over 40 scientific studies; the best known of these is a 1991 report in Science that described a difference in brain structure between heterosexual and homosexual men. He is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including Gay, Straight, and the Reason Why: The Science of Sexual Orientation (Oxford University Press, 2011), and a historical novel, The Donation of Constantine (Lambourn Books, 2013). Janice Baldwin, Ph.D. and John Baldwin, Ph.D. are sociologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. They have been collaborators in numerous studies and coauthored many articles in the area of sexuality and sex education, as well as the textbook Behavior Principles in Everyday Life (Prentice Hall), now in its fourth edition. The Baldwins co-teach an undergraduate Human Sexuality course that is regularly voted Best Course at UCSB. I was very disappointed with the quality of the book when I opened it. It didn't seem new to me because there is a crease on the upper right corner of the book's cover. I guess it is because the protection was pretty poor so it got damaged on the way.

Practical and inspiring

As an editor on a psychology magazine, I see a lot of books about how to improve your couple relationship. When this one crossed my desk, I took notice. Starting from a simple premise - that couples have a lot of fun when they first get together, but that fun increasingly takes a back seat over the years - Schwarz and Braff argue that many relationship problems can be solved by upping your fun quotient within your couple. They then offer real world advice on how to start having fun together again, even when your family and work life are demanding and time consuming. The book is definitely accessible for couples as well as practitioners, and I highly recommend it to both - it's an inspiring, enjoyable and smart read.

Great Advice for Couples

Even if you think your relationship is OK, this book provides some great insights on improving it even more. If your relationship is less than great, this book is a must. My advice is to skip the first chapter as it is very technical and somewhat less than exciting. The remainder of the book is fantastic, we'll written, very fascinating thought about why things in relationships go south and some great points on making things better. Highly recommended and enlightening.

It can be fun after all!

Joyous,encouraging,positive,and thought provoking approach to couples therapy.
Although I have not completed this book yet,it really rang true with my personal experiences with relationships.
When I take a play history from my patients, it has usually been quite revealing and helpful.
I am very grateful to the authors for their refreshing approach to a very difficult problem.

Wait for the second edition unless you're okay with reading being hard work.

I am reading this book on Safari Books Online ... I make note of this just in case the print edition is different.

I'm still reading this book (I'm only on Chapter 3) but I'm compelled to write this because the book has numerous mistakes that could seriously impair its use as a tool for learning sbt. Many of the errors are easy to spot and correct on the fly. Other errors are fundamental to the learning process and really get in the way.

The kinds of errors that proliferate are errors in sequence and errors in the names of things.

An example of an error in sequence: early in chapter 3, the book communicates that the "build.sbt" file we got to at the end chapter 2 included initializing the organization setting. In fact, chapter 2 makes no mention of this setting whatsoever.

Another sequence error: Chapter 3 also talks about using settings to define the value of other settings. But the examples it gives for doing this can't be typed in and used because they assume the existence of a project that is not defined until later in the project (or perhaps at all, as I said I'm still reading).

Errors in the names of things: The book is completely riddled with these errors. The book leads you through creating a makeVersionProperties task. Later it tells you to use the makePropertiesFile task. The book leads you through creating a gitHeadCommitSha task. Later it tells you to use the gitHeadCommit task. These differences in names break the build. They are easy to fix. But they slow you down. And the fact that they are easy to fix begs the question ... WHY didn't the authors find and fix them before publication?

General inconsistencies. For example, the book says to use sbt version 0.13.5. Then its examples (at least some of them) show using sbt 0.13.7 instead. The differences between 0.13.5 and 0.13.7 are significant enough that they impact how you must or are allowed to write the build (specifically, I'm talking about whether blank lines are required between settings).

Worst by far though is that the examples in the book describe an sbt build that does not work as written. The book tells you to add the following line:

resourceGenerators in Compile += makePropertiesFile

As I mentioned, makePropertiesFile is the wrong name, it should be makeVersionProperties. But even when you fix that the build still doesn't work, and unlike the other examples I have mentioned this is a real head scratcher for someone not familiar with sbt (in other words, the intended audience of this book). I had to search online for how to fix this issue to learn that the line should actually be:

resourceGenerators in Compile += makeVersionProperties.taskValue

This was very confusing.

Aside from the preceding the book doesn't seem to know who its audience is. I am a software developer as I imagine will be every other person who reads this book. Yet the book inexplicably shies away from explaining things in terms software developers should all understand. Instead of uniformly using the word "type" in the sense universally understood by programmers, it sometimes calls the type the "shape" and in other cases the "keyhole" of a setting.

And it uses what I found to be a pretty clumsy spreadsheet analogy to explain the concept of settings in sbt. While the analogy is not itself "wrong", it kept making me ask the question, "Why are they using this analogy? Why describe scopes as tabs in a spreadsheet?" Instead of having the explanatory power the authors hoped for, this only obscured the meaning for me as I kept re-reading and trying to understand what I could be missing that made them choose this analogy. And it is easier for me to think in terms of types, scopes, and so on than in the terms of spreadsheets anyway. I had to continually translate from the spreadsheet analogy to what they really meant to say.

The book is informative. It could have been a great book, and it may become a great book in future editions but for now my advice has to be: wait for the second edition unless you are OK with putting a lot of effort into wrapping your head around what the authors are trying to say. I say this as someone who IS willing to make the effort ... I'm a Scala enthusiast and I expect to be an sbt enthusiast by the end of the book, but the mistakes are like stop signs that prevent me from building up a good chunk of momentum. For me it's worth the effort. It won't be for everyone.

Can it get better? No doubt. If you are working with sbt this book can really help you. The online documentation of sbt is not the greatest and this book fills a much needed gap. I look forward to a much better version when sbt 1.0 gets out.

Boxed set offers bonus portfolio of more photos

I bought this boxed set as a gift for my daughter, first for her to read and second for her to have to read to her children as they become old enough. I have reviewed each volume as it was published.
The boxed set includes a small portfolio of more pictures of the sort that grace the pages of each volume, which makes buying the boxed set, now that it is available, a better idea than purchasing each book separately. As I have wondered about this series and at least one other, I don't see this as truly YA genre. I mean, yes, intelligent 'tweens and teens can read and love it, but it is, overall, pretty heavy and heady stuff. In short, this is as much for adult fans of alternate reality/history as it is for its purported target demographic. Buy it, you'll love it.

I would like to comment on the quality of the books themselves

I recently purchased this boxed set of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children for myself. I am excited to finish these before the movie comes out. I don't want to review the writing as I am no expert but, I do want to say that I am thoroughly enjoying myself with these books. I would like to comment on the quality of the books themselves. Over my years as a reader I have found the quality of books themselves declining. Most often the pages are either thin and flimsy or rough and grainy. It has been years since I have seen a book with evenly cut pages! this set of books is beautiful! The quality of the paper is wonderful and the pages are cut perfectly I know i will enjoy these fooks for years to come. They are a wonderful addition to my home library!

A very good set of books

I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed reading these books. I read the set in 4 days, I enjoyed it that much. Well written, entertaining and well paced. Mr. Riggs was able to suspend my disbelief with interesting characters, entertaining situations, colorful descriptors and comic timing. While I am much older than what I assume the target audience is, the story was able to capture my interest and hold it. I would recommend this set to young, old and in between, alike. I am betting, you won't be disappointed.

About the Author
Deanne Spears is originally from Portland, Oregon. She now considers herself a native Californian, having moved to Los Angeles when freeways and smog were relatively new concepts. During her childhood and adolescence, she spent carefree summers i na small farming community in northwest Iowa. After receiving a B.A. and an M.A. in comparative literature from the University of Southern California, she began teaching composition and reading at City College of San Francisco. She continues to tutor students in reading and composition and to conduct teacher-preparation workshops for the college. In addition to her primary interests - reading and studying Italian - she and her husband David enjoy cooking, watching movies (there are over 100 titles in their Netflix queue), kayaking in Princeton Harbor, camping (especially in the Gold Lakes Basin area of Northern California), and searching out inexpensive ethnic restaurants. Deanne is the author of Improving Reading Skills (7th edition, 2013) and, with David Spears, In Tandem: College Reading and Writing (2007), also published by McGraw-Hill.

About the Author
Leonard M. C. Sagis obtained a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University, in 1994. After postdoctoral positions at the University of Leiden, and University of Amsterdam, he joined the faculty in the Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences of Wageningen University, in 1998. His research interests are in the field of structure-function relationships in soft interface dominated materials, such as foam, emulsions, and microencapsulation systems.
