I'm with a company called Schedulefly, and restaurants are our customers. When one of my business partners and I decided that we'd like to open a restaurant one day and began outlining a concept, we realized that as cool as that sounded, we didn't know what it takes to be successful in such a tough industry.  We decided to start interviewing restaurant owners to find out how they do it.  The interviews were so full of great advice and wisdom, we knew we needed to find a way to share them. 

This book is a collection of those interviews - the stories of twenty restaurant owners from all over the U.S., and one from Canada.  They all tell how they got started, what's worked for them, what hasn't worked, and the pearls of wisdom they've learned along the way.  They're all very open, honest and candid about what the restaurant business is like - both the pros and the cons. A Bible to Starting and Running a Successful Business, Restaurant or Not

Most of the so called "entreprenurial" books are filled with rhetoric from an author describing how he or she started a successful company. Most also contain a lot of what I like to call "fluff" and cliched advice. This Gem "Restaurant Owners Uncorked" contains e)none of the above.

The author of this book is a skilled Software entrepreneur (First Research, ScheduleFly), but admirably and humbly never touts his own experiences or opinions. Instead, through brilliant open-ended and consultative questioning, Wil Brawley guides 20 other successful restaurant entrepreneurs down an exciting path in which they each share tactical advice and nuggets that any business executive will learn from (including myself). Each chapter is it's own journey including do's, dont's, and what it takes to win. If you are thinking of starting any business, this book is a must read. BEWARE - Once you begin it's impossible to put down, except to run and grab a highlighter or jump online and purchase more copies for your colleagues.

Direct answers to real time small business dilemmas

I followed the creation of this book through the weekly posting of excerpts that the Schedule-fly website Blog provided. As a small business owner NOT in the food industry I was initially surprised by the common sense approach and situational similarities my business experience shared with these folks being interviewed. I have a couple of friends that have started coffee shop and cupcake stores recently so I was excited to share this read and great insight with them. The pressure of location to hiring the right people to getting new folks through the door and then making sure they come back because they feel you have set yourself apart from the other choices that consumer has are difficult... To see these owners with such different backgrounds and approaches answer the important start-up questions unscripted reassured me in some areas and told me where we need to improve in others. Definitely recommend this book for all small business owners who like to think outside the box..

Absolutely amazing

As someone who's been in the industry for a bit but just about to open their first spot, this book is absolutely amazing. It's not something written by some consultant who was indispensable to the growth of Applebee's or a professor who's done a study of 300 restaurants but hasn't opened one himself.

This book talks to a wide variety of owners, in a wide variety of market-types, and comes away with so many great things to keep in mind as you delve in to the world of restaurant-opening and operating. You get candid conversations with owners about how they succeeded and what exactly they screwed up (and you can avoid it yourself).

The book is done in interview form so it's not an author's interpretation of what they thought was the owner's most important information. To the contrary, the weakest part of the book is when the author does a few short "key points" at the end of each interview to give you the takeaways. Take those or leave 'em, you'll probably get something different than he did.

If you have a restaurant book library, this needs to be in it. If you only read 3 books before you open a restaurant (please read at least 3), then this needs to be one of those 3.

The stakes are high and the pressure is on to do well. Examiners know that. Now as a test taker know that too. This guide clears up a lot of misconceptions about standardized tests and what is needed to pass them. It also gives the testing information plain and simple.

About the Author
Harold Coyle is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Class of ’74, the Armor Officers Basic Course at Fort Knox, Ky, the Infantry Officer’s Advance Course at Fort Benning, Ga, and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Ks. He served in Germany from January 1975 to December 1979 with 3rd Battalion, 68th Armor, which was stationed at Sullivan Barracks outside the town of Käfertal. During this time he commanded Company A / 3-68 Armor which was attached to 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry for training and wartime contingencies. Other assignments included M-1 Branch chief, Weapons Department of the Armor School at Fort Knox; advisor to the National Guard with Readiness Group Devens; assistant operations officer with the Combined Field Army in Korea; G-3 Training officer with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood; Task Force Operations officer for 1st of the 32nd Armor; admin officer and instructor for the Command and General Staff College’s Combat Studies Institute; and executive officer to the Deputy Commanding General of the 3rd Army during Desert Storm.

Read the hardcover or paperback version. This digital version is Butchered.

I read this book in paperback when it first came out and enjoyed it. However, the digital version is simply butchered.
The novel was not scanned and digitized, it was transcribed with grammatical errors galore.
For those thinking of getting the kindle version be advised that words like "down" has been replaced with clown. And "thing" replaced with thong.

Of all digital books, this one has been through a meat grinder and I would recommend spending the time with the printed version than the digital version.

Example. from the book in my lap. "Tessman greeted Harrert and led him and the medic to where the lieutenant was lying, face down," Kindle excerpt, "Tessman, who greeted Harrert, led him and the medic to where the lieutenant was laying next to 21 facedown on the crew had thrown down on the ground."
It is not just an issue with the wrong words inserted, it is the fact that sentences are restructured and punctuated in ways that do not reflect the original print.

Whoever transcribed this book to digital needs to be fired and banned from transcribing.

Team Yankee - Step into the cupola!

To say that Team Yankee is a high speed, low drag, and intense military thriller would be a vast understatement! This is an in your face, action packed, combat thriller that is hard to put down once you've started it. Being a former soldier, Harold Coyle knows what being a soldier is about. Armed with a VMI education and seventeen years of Active Duty in the US Army, the author set out to write a military thriller about a possible European, NATO/Warsaw Pact conventional conflict. He quite successfully accomplished that mission with Team Yankee, in flying colors! He has a particularly good writing style that is very fluid and doesn't get bogged down heavily in the details.
Team Yankee begins with a succinct set up as to why the conflict starts. He then flows perfectly into the nuts and bolts of a very likely scenario of how a conventional WWIII would've begun in the mid to late 80's. The story concentrates heavily on Captain Sean Bannon, commander of Team Yankee which is a detached armor team with mechanized infantry attached to them.
Along with the highly intense initial combat scenarios, there are the harrowing evacuation scenes of his wife Pat, their kids and the other dependents of Team Yankee! These scenes are exceptionally well written and will leave you exhausted.
The author puts on display a great many things that can happen during war, to include the "fog of war," where there are times when communications are cut and Company Commanders have to totally wing it and pray for the best. He flawlessly displays the entire gamut of emotions that Captain Bannon and the other soldiers are going through, throughout the entire novel. In essence, this novel puts you in the Tank Commanders cupola completely and thoroughly. The dialogue is tremendously well written, along with well detailed explanations for the "plans" of attack or defense. As an added bonus, there are detailed graphics with the proper symbols for units' friendly and enemy alike. Thank God this is a work of fiction and humanity did not have to face the brutal realism in this book!
Not since I read Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" or Larry Bonds "Red Phoenix" have I read a military action thriller written this well. If you're into military/action thrillers, this true treasure is one you need to add to your library. It took me a while to locate a decent copy of this book and it was well worth the search!

You can almost smell the cordite....

I first read this book in 1990 while serving in West Germany as a Cavalry Scout with 4/7 Cav 3rd Armored Div. I really enjoyed it at the time. I later served in Operation Desert Sheild/Storm and was involved a heavy armor engagement at the Battle of 73 Easting. This book is as close as you can get without having to dodge sabot rounds. Coyle does a great job of not only mastering military jargon and weapons systems but he also captures the fear and terror felt by the common tanker and foot soldier... probably the most powerful war story I have ever read.

Great Book, must have: it's the Eclipse E4 Bible !

This book is a complete and effective guide to build Eclipse E4 Applications. It's the sum of the work of one of the Eclipse 4 leading experts; and it is also the result of a choral effort of many Eclipse experts and bloggers. In short, this is the book that any Eclipse E4 developer must have on the desk.

The book contains exercises, concise technical explanations, and comes with an exhaustive and updated list of topics. It's the ideal mix for who like to read, understand and make practice "little by little".

The book is quite consistent and well organized. There are more than 700 pages containing 144 sections, each one of around 3-4 pages. The sections are logically grouped in 38 chapters, and the overall readability is good.

As R&D Engineer I'm a constant reader of the vogella.com blog, and I've already bought the previous Lars' E4 book, in digital format. This is the only "printed book" that I've I bought for the Eclipse E4 development. And I'm sure: this book is "The E4 Bible".

An awesome book about how to write Eclipse 4.3 RCP applications

This book is, like the one before, easy to read and in my opinion Lars Vogel knows how to use a few words to explain you the world of Eclipse 4 applications. It covers a lot of common scenarios every developer will meat in his daily work. He explains the important services and techniques of Eclipse 4 which every developer should know. The structure of the book allows you to read it from the beginning to the end or even take it as a kind of reference. A huge number of examples and tutorials help to understand the concepts and work-flows of the new Eclipse e4 workbench.

The basics about OSGi, SWT and JFace make this book also an interesting entry point for Eclipse beginners and help the already familiar developers to refresh their knowledge or inspire them to new/old ideas.

Lars Vogel also provides a lot of help and some nice extra topics, which go beyond the scope of this book, on his homepage.

For me this book is a “must-have” for every Eclipse 4 RCP developer, because nothing (except the source-code) explains such a lot of details about the new Eclipse 4.

Excellent step by step guide for RCP 4

This review is for the Kindle edition of the book.

I consider myself to be an intermediate Eclipse developer, and have had a part in creating 5 Eclipse plugins for internal use by my company. Until my current project, I never had the need to create a standalone RCP application. From experience, I have found that the author of this book (Lars Vogel, at [...]) has posted some of the most comprehensive and detailed tutorials about many programming topics that have been relevant to my work.

This book is a great resource for anyone wanting to create RCP applications. There is a lot of sample code and step by step examples for beginners. Experienced developers can look forward to detailed descriptions about what has changed and a section about porting your existing plugins to the RCP4 model.

Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase, and am happy to support the author since his tutorials have helped me out so much over the years.

About the Author

Kenneth Laws is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Dickinson College. He has been active in the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and has instructed Dickinson students in ballet throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He is the author of two books about physics and dance and is the leading expert on the subject.

As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need.

The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

Absolutely incredible!

This book is INCREDIBLE!

I have several years of different kinds of dance and dance-related background (social dancing - swing, tango, etc.; yoga, pilates, ballet, ...) I also have a strong background in mathematics, physics, computer science (will have a Ph.D. in a few months) and related disciplines.

If you have some college-level physics background, or even a solid understanding of high-school physics, chances are that you can work out many of the things in this book on your own. But it takes time, and you may not have the enthusiasm. (In fact, after reading this book you may get the enthusiasm to actually work out a few things.) On the other hand, if you have this kind of background, then reading this book is simple, very enjoyable, and also a great learning experience. You do not have to understand everything. If you understand one idea from each chapter - that is more than enough to read this book. (For example, if the only things you understand from the chapter on pirouettes is that it makes sense to push into the floor with both legs in opposite directions. Another idea you may get from another chapter is - why your body wants to lean in the direction you are starting to fall to actually save you from falling.)

This is great for learning dance on top of your scientific background. In minutes you pick up things that would take months to discover. You start applying them immediately. Very quickly (if you devote some time to thinking over this book) it creates a framework in your mind. You come to a dance class, and you understand so much more, because many of the things can be easily explained in the framework of this book. In other words, the book gives you a quick foundation to build on top, if you have intellect and years of education, rather than years of dance background (then you already do have a foundation).

Besides, this book gives you a better understanding of physics. Especially if you are more of a dancer than a thinker, then, I would assume (not sure though) you can get a lot of physics out of it. That is, you can use the book the other way round. You know how something feels, and then you can relate to the physical explanation.

I am not, however, sure that this book would be of equal benefit to those who don't know much physics. Generally speaking, I would highly recommend to every dancer to actually learn some physics. Especially if you are in college, take a course in basic Newtonian mechanics. (This can make even more sense for a dancer, than learning anatomy or music.) The author of the book stresses it a lot, many dancers without a science background do many things that are counterproductive. It takes just a little scientific thinking to recognize these mistakes and stop wasting time. Just like it is useful to know how your body works to e.g. strech safely and efficiently, it is also useful to know how nature works to dance better.

If you ask "What does it feel like, when you know more physics, how does it help to dance?" --- I can try to answer. You know how it feels when you notice which way you are falling (out of balance or out of alignment) - forward, sideways, etc., right? You notice, then you fix it. After this book, especially if you have some physics background to relate to, but perhaps even without it, you will start to notice how having your feet further apart makes it easier to rotate (e.g. pirouette from 4th), how lifting your leg in Arabesque Pirouette slows you down (unless you lift it higher than 90 degrees), how sacrificing turnout before a grand jete makes your jump longer and higher; how you get more tired when doing slower jumps then when doing faster jumps, and other kinds of things. The world will become more clear for you, easier to understand; it will make more sense.

If you do some other dance style, you would also definitely benefit from this book. (You would benefit much more if you supplmenent your dancing by taking some ballet classes, at least for a year, and then you can apply this book to your dance style.) If you do acrobatics, martial arts, etc., you can greatly benefit from this book as well, but again, you need to be able to relate to this book. You need to know some ballet (better by personal experience) and/or some physics, at least on a basic level (e.g. 2nd Newton's law, F=ma).

If you are a physicist, note that this book is not technical. It has some appendices (still pretty basic) and plenty of references, some, presumably, to more technical materials. So you can use it as a starting point. (Not sure there is much technical research on the physics of dance or related activities.)
