For anyone involved in working with bilinguals in a mental health setting, it is important to understand the concepts Javier brings to improve our understanding that speaking English (or the dominant language) does not mean that the emotions of the individual are translated as easily. One of the most accurate battel manuevewr element books on DakTo

I served with MSG Lawrence Okendo in 1967 during the hill battles around Dak To in the Central Highlands of S.Vietnam. He was one of the most aggressive and hard charging paratroopers from the old days of brown boot paratroopers I ever met. One hell of a good soldier and he really cared for his men. being with the 173d Airborne brigade during the Hill Battles, he has written to me at least and a lot of other guys' who were there, the most authoritative and accurate troop movement assessment of all the actions the Skysoldiers' fought in from The Battle of The Slopes, Hill 823, 830 and the ultimate name maker of the 173d Airborne Brigade HILL 875. If your interested in one particular paratrooper unit and how we fought the NVA, then this book should be in your library. I will miss MSG Lawrence Okendo. He taught me a lot as a soldier, a man and as paratrooper!!!

a dramatic tale

The cover and description made it seem that this story would be light and frothy, and there is a bit of fun in the middle of the book as the two main characters fall in love. However, Cara Colter writes insight into people's hearts and issues very well, and a lot of those issues are not easy ones. In this case the hero had a tough childhood with an angry father and a mother who just left. He was taken in by a kind retired judge who saw the good in him and helped him to become quite successful, but enough scars remained to make forming a happy relationship a slow battle against his doubting self.

Fascinating peek into expat oil brat experience

A unique and interesting memoir about a young Texas girl coming of age in revolution-torn Venezuela. Told in a conversational, kitchen-table voice, the wry and funny stories are entertaining on the surface but reveal a far deeper sense of loneliness and homesickness of a middle class teenager unceremoniously plucked from her familiar life and dropped in alien territory.

This story is also a peek into the expat oil brat culture of that era, the culture shock all the more vivid from the point of view of a homesick teenager.

Great period details and tropical imagery transport the reader to another time and place.

A good read

For those of us that grew up and worked in Venezuela in the days before the nationalizing of the oil industry in the seventies, let alone before Coronel Hugo Chávez "Robolución", this book strikes a cord indeed.
The sweet and sympathetic observations by a young girl of the disconnect between two cultures are poignant: That of a Venezuela emerging from medieval feudalism and that of the U.S. Southwest's "Oil Patch".
One would wish that Oliver Stone, Sean Penn and Michael Moore had taken the course in Venezuelan Social Studies that Ms.Berman took in the Escuela Bella Vista in the 1950's!

Good memories of great times!

Susan’s and my life paralleled – small town Texas girl, Dad worked for SunOCo, 1950s – 1970s, same friends and acquaintances, EBV etcetera, etcetera. Her stories bought back thoughts and memories that I thoroughly enjoyed recounting. However, I was taken aback by Susan’s negativity. That was a time when life was great and every day was an adventure. We were fortunatel to be exposed to places, things and people that few are lucky to experience. I continue to reunite with my EBV family and a small group of friends get together every year. Last month we prepared arepas, empanadas, tamarindo and other treats of our youth.
The derogatory name calling of the Venezuelans is appalling and unacceptable. We should respect that we were guests in a foreign country while profiting and prospering. Perhaps Susan was so miserable because of the arrogance and poor attitude.

A consant rehashing of the same topics chapter after chapter...dry, uninteresting...yet had to read for class. Good luck w/ this one unless you are a believer in any number of Ed. theories.

Kitty Kelley usually does good research for her unauthorized biographies, but in this tome she focuses on Sinatra's life in questionable ways. Very little personal comments. J. Randy Taraborelli is a much better writer. Don't waste your money on this one.

About the Author
Thomas A. Mappes holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University. He is professor of philosophy at Frostburg State University, where he has taught since 1973. He is the coeditor (with Jane S. Zembaty) of Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy (McGraw-Hill, 4/e, 1992) and his published work appears in journals such as American Philosophical Quarterly and Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal. In 1985, the Frostburg State University Foundation presented him with the Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching.

David DeGrazia earned a B.A. from the University of Chicago, an M.St. from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. from Gerogetown University, each in philosophy. He has been teaching philosophy and biomedical ethics at George Washington University since 1989. He is the author of Taking Animals Seriously (Cambridge University Press) and of articles published in such journals as Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Public Affairs Quarterly, History of Philosophy Quarterly, and Southern Journal of Philosophy.

A competent work

"Biomedical Ethics," by Thomas Mappes and David DeGrazia, now in its Seventh Edition, has been around in one form or another for more than 30 years. It is a competent though not exceptional text. It covers many of the standard issues in biomedical ethics, such as doctor-assisted suicide, abortion, the physician-patient relationship, patients' rights, decisions regarding life-sustaining treatments, experimentation on animals and human clinical trials, and healthcare reforms. Many of the standard and better-known articles in these various areas of biomedical ethics are anthologized. Each chapter is introduced by a fairly helpful (though at times somewhat dry) description of the issues written by Mappes and DeGrazia. It is not as thorough as some texts (Munson's "Intervention and Reflection" comes to mind), and it is definitely weighted toward medical ethics rather than bioethics in a broader sense, but it is certainly an appropriate text for a fairly advanced undergraduate course in the area.

The price for the paperback, which is approximately $100 is a bit steep, and the hardback edition is even more expensive. This is a drawback. But there isn't a whole lot that can be done about this. However, instructors who are looking for a reasonable text for their students might want to look elsewhere.
