The Disciplined Leader TRUMPS All Other Leadership Books IMHO!

This most recent book from this organization is absolutely ASTOUNDING! The last book they had was more "testimonial" driven ... but, THIS book, is more about actual instructions on making the commitment, exercising courage, managing things that worry you, encouragement to 'know yourself', being truthful, having humility, how to zero in on your values .... along with a GREAT chapter on how to get out of your own way.... I of course, have become victim to this, and this of course, is of GREAT encouragement.

I have realized, that even the best of the best need lessons... Even the best golfers in the world need help ... They all need some kind of tune up on a regular basis.

Leaders are not any different --- Every leader needs some kind of tune up on a regular basis ... and this book does JUST that.

It truly has helped me to realign what I 'thought' I was doing right... It is a book of encouragement ... and uplifting....

I am also using this book from a personal perspective as well ... Being overweight ... THIS book is an excellent means of encouraging me to make a change in my own life where, for most of my life, my attitude and approach have been cattie-wompus....

I'm already looking forward to the next one....

A Book About How to Be, Not Just How to Act

John Manning’s book reads like a daily leadership devotional. These 52 lessons apply to any leader in any industry or context. The Disciplined Leader delivers sound advice not simply on how to act, but on how to be in order to become a better leader. The book deals with the need to evaluate and evolve one’s attitudes and perspectives as a means for better performance outcomes.

There are so many ways to use this book to improve as a leader and as a team. I will read these lessons repeatedly as part of my effort to continuously look inward at the barriers that I’ve placed between the people on my team and their performance potential. I will also use this book as a 360º teaching tool to begin weekly team meetings. Everyone on your team is a leader at some level, and the book's advice applies to them as well.

Many of the other books that I’ve read about leadership espouse a specific leadership style, process, or context such as leading millennial workers. In The Disciplined Leader, Manning recognizes that there is no one size fits all leadership style. “There’s no perfect leader…” he writes in the opening sentence of the book. Instead, he focuses on the best practices of developing oneself into being a better leader.

Meditate on these 52 concise, powerful lessons and put them to work for you and your company. Your team will thank you for it.

A must read for anyone looking to develop a people focused leadership style

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about goals and just plain getting things done, is that you need to break them down to work on them in pieces. It holds you accountable and makes life a whole lot less complicated and overwhelming. In tackling any project I take it one step at a time and pace myself so that I can succeed and, in the case of learning, absorb information.

I am continually trying to refine my leadership style and discover how I can be a more effective transparent and effective leader in everything that I do. I was fortunate to be given one of the best tools around to help guide my leadership in baby steps. I recently read the book “The Disciplined Leader: 52 Concise, Powerful Lessons Keeping the Focus on What Really Matters” by John Manning. This little gem is the kind of book that I keep on my nightstand to wake up to and digest quick leadership lessons before starting my day.

Manning is very passionate about the fact that the best leaders are disciplined. They focus on what is important –PEOPLE – in order to get results. To this end, he offers 52 great concise yet powerful lessons to read at leisure and digest. They focus on 3 key areas:

 Leading yourself
 Leading your team
 Leading your organization

Each lesson is followed up with tactics, practical advice and 2 action or reflective ideas which is why I loved the format and lessons. I can read just one at a time or skip around and still find relevancy and application to my day. The lessons are very hands on and user friendly. It’s like having a leadership bible at your fingertips. I enjoyed the easy reading that really helped me to set a leadership plan for life. The meaningful aspect about Manning’s lessons is that they are applicable to both your professional and person life.

Manning focuses on the concept that we are all too familiar with, the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 rule. 20% of your efforts produce 80% of your results. The same applies to your customer profitability and the productivity of your key employees. By focusing your efforts on what really matters – your people – you will bring out the best in everyone and this is really where the gold is. Learning and using the lessons in this gem of a book will really help you to apply the 80/20 rule and guide you to plan what to do, when, and how. Both you and your team will win.

The best way to use this book is to read the lessons and then sit back to reflect. Anita Shreve's All He Ever Wanted reads like Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own told from the perspective of the husband. The wife gains a measure of freedom, but how does the repressive, abandoned husband feel about that freedom? Set in the early 1900s in the fictional New England college town of Thrupp, and narrated by the pompous Nicholas Van Tassel, All He Ever Wanted is at once an academic satire, a period novel, and a tale of suspense. Shreve's ability to nimbly hop through genres brings a liveliness to this story of love gone depressingly wrong. Van Tassel is an undistinguished professor of rhetoric at Thrupp College and a confirmed bachelor when he meets--in no less flamy a scenario than a hotel fire--the arresting Miss Etna Bliss. Immediately smitten, he woos and wins her. At least, he persuades her to become his wife. But Van Tassel hasn't really won her. Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings to herself. The extent of her withholding only becomes clear after a couple of kids and a decade or so of marriage. Then we find out that she's been creating a secret haven for herself all along. Van Tassel is in turn revealed--through his own priggish, puffed-up sentences--as something of a monster. The book is cleverly done; watching Etna through Van Tassel's eyes is like looking at beautiful bird from a hungry cat's point of view. But Van Tassel's voice might be too well written; he's pedantic and dull and snarky all at once, and by the end we find that we, like Etna, can't bear his company a minute longer. --Claire Dederer

In bestsellers such as Fortune's Rocks, Shreve has revealed an impeccably sharp eye and a generous emotional sensitivity in describing the moment when a man and a woman become infatuated with each. She is less successful this time out, perhaps because the epiphany is one-sided. Escaping from a New Hampshire hotel fire at the turn of the 20th century, Prof. Nicholas Van Tassel catches sight of Etna Bliss and is instantly smitten. She does not reciprocate his feeling, for she has her own unrequited lust, for freedom and independence. That they marry guarantees tragedy. Nicholas tells the story in retrospect, writing feverishly on a train trip in 1933 to his sister's funeral in Florida. His pedantic style is full of parenthetical asides, portentous foreshadowing and rhetorical throat. His erotic swoon commands sympathy, until it carries him past any definition of decency. He will do anything to bring down Philip Asher, his academic rival and the brother of Etna's true love, Samuel. He plays on prevailing anti-Semitism (the Ashers are Jewish), and he persuades his daughter, Clara, to claim that Philip touched her improperly, which besmirches not only Philip's reputation but Clara's as well. We see Etna herself only secondhand, except for some correspondence with Philip reproduced toward the end of the tale. Credit the author for making the point that Etna and her sisters had too little autonomy even to tell their own stories, but filtering Etna's experience through Nicholas's sensibility deprives the novel of intimacy and immediacy.

Shreve at her very best! One of my favorite books of 2003!

Like Fortune's Rocks and Sea Glass, All He Ever Wanted by Anita Shreve is a book filled with wonderful characters set against a historical background of social mores and traditions. And as she did in he previous historical novels, the author offers her readers a wonderful novel and one that left me wishing for another book by Anita Shreve.
All He Ever Wanted begins during a fire when Nicholas Van Tassel, a professor at a small college in New Hampshire, spots a young woman and accompanies her home that evening. Almost immediately Nicholas becomes besotted with the woman Ms. Etna Bliss and begins courting her. From this point of the narrative, Shreve moves the scene to a time many years later as Nicholas recounts the story of his love for Etna on a train as he is bound for his sister's funeral in Florida. At this point Shreve becomes almost a modern day Edith Wharton as through Nicholas we come to learn about his views of society in the early 1900's through 1930. As readers, we watch as Nicholas becomes further obsessed with Etna, thwarts a rival for a competitive position at the college and eventually comes under scrutiny for a transgression he did many years before. And as these events are taking place we also watch as Nicholas' and Etna's relationship begins to spiral out of control and wonder how this will all be resolved. For in the end all Nicholas ever wanted is the love of Etna.
I highly recommend this book to those readers who have enjoyed Anita Shreve in the past and for those who may want to read her for the first time. The author has a wonderful ability to put her readers right between the pages of the book. In addition the narrative evokes the language and society of the 1900's. Shreve has done an excellent job of describing these events from the point of view of a man deeply in love and this book makes for a very worthwhile read. I enjoyed it so much that I rated it among my ten top favorite reads for 2003.

Why spend time with someone so thoroughly unpleasant?!

All He Ever Wanted begins with a hotel fire in the early 1900's. The narrator of the story (who is recounting his past while en route to his sister's funeral) bachelor Nicholas Van Tassel, a stuffy professor at a snotty boys' school, is inside the hotel when the blaze begins but leaves unscathed. During this tragedy where twenty people perish in a fiery death he meets the woman of his dreams, Etna Bliss.
Etna's "handsome" face, her lovely waist and her other womanly attributes haunt his every thought. Even her name, Bliss, brings lusty thoughts to his mind (and starts my skin to crawling). His infatuation is all consuming and before long he begins to pursue her with all of the gusto of a starving dog drooling over a choice bit of meat. She eventually agrees to a date where he learns, a bit to his dismay, that she has a brain as well as fine breasts and is surprisingly literate. They read stories together and seem to get along well but when he makes a move or turns the conversation towards the personal she immediately gives him the cold shoulder. I should add that Nicholas is described as the most un-athletic man on earth with a slight paunch and a balding pate. The sexual attraction seems entirely one-sided and a bit creepy. At this point I would've put the book aside unfinished as I found Nicholas Van Tassel boring beyond belief and far too pompous. However, since I was listening to this in its unabridged format and I was stuck in traffic I continued to torture myself with Nicholas Van Tassel's words (expertly read by a narrator who reads in a purposely haughty way).
Despite the fact that Etna does not return his feelings of undying love he insists that they marry and, oddly enough, she agrees! Thus begins their awkward life together. During their years of marriage they parent two children (and, thakfully, we are spared the oogey details of their sterile love making ~ thank you Mr. Van Tassel for speedily skipping by those bits and saving me a few shudders!) and seem to get along decently enough as they plod along through their days. Nicholas gives Etna a nice life and the freedom to do whatever she wishes but sadly the love Nicholas aches for is never returned by Etna. Nicholas, the poor love starved sap, is grateful just to have her for his wife and doesn't complain about her complete lack of affection towards him. But things begin to change when he discovers that Etna has been hiding things from him. This is where the book finally picked up and actually engaged my full attention.
At this point Nicholas *almost* becomes a sympathetic character if you can believe it (though he is still a thoroughly unpleasant fellow)! He is riddled with insecurities and although he has been married to a woman he cherishes for years he will never be a happy or successful man. His world begins to spiral out of control as he simultaneously discovers Etna's been keeping secrets and learns the position he's been longing to have at the University may be forever out of his reach.
Nicholas's festering jealously and over-reaction to Etna's secret (which was odd but not nearly as devastatingly earth-shattering as I'd anticipated), however, ruin any smidgen of pity I may have felt for him just a few chapters earlier. Author Shreve successfully paints an unpleasant picture of a thoroughly unpleasant man caught up in a situation of his own making. Reading Nicolas Van Tassel's vitriolic comments and actions for pages on end was a depressing experience that I won't be repeating any time soon!

Gripping and Unforgettable

Anita Shreve simply does not write ordinary books. Even her lesser efforts tend to leave the reader gasping for air at the end--and "All He Ever Wanted," one of her best, in my opinion, is breathtaking in the same shocking way.
Written entirely from the point of view of a stodgy male college professor circa 1900, this is the story of a passion so intense, so unlike the writer himself, that it is scarcely believable, especially when related in the stilted flowery language of the day.
Nicholas Van Tassel, a rather ordinary pedantic with nothing particularly unusual about him, happens to be in a hotel restaurant when it catches fire. This single pivotal episode in his otherwise unremarkable life changes him forever--it is during the rescue effort that he encounters Miss Etna Bliss, and falls head over heels into a passion that borders on, indeed IS, an obsession.
Hampered by the extreme rules of etiquette governing proper men and women of the day, Van Tassel nevertheless pursues Miss Bliss, finally persuading her to marry him despite her the fact that, as she honestly tells him, she does not love him. Love will come, thinks Van Tassel, hardly able to believe his luck in winning his prize. And that hope, that fantasy, that overwhelming obsession of his entire being, eventually destroys the narrator, his wife, and his entire family.
Shreve stays in character completely and thoroughly, managing to evoke the failings of the man himself, the restrictions of the society in which he lives, and the hopelessness of his obsession without ever once betraying herself. It is safe to say that the author stays well in the background while letting Van Tassel tell his own tragic story.
I consider this book a minor masterpiece. Shreve is an acquired taste, I know--but truly innovative and absolutely original in every book she writes. "All He Ever Wanted" is no exception.

You've gotta buy this book! Funny and refreshingly honest!

This book was very good for me. I was shocked at how candid the ladies were but that was just what I needed! It helped me not feel alone and to cope with the things I thought weren't normal. I love the different view points and this did have me laughing too. I highly recommend and again appreciate the ladies honesty and bluntness. It wasn't sugar coated and their honesty was refreshing!

My heart was touched in so many ways. I love how real these women were as they explained their situation. This book brought tears, smiles and hope. God was definitely present when writing this book. I recommend this book to any woman that needs uplifting, encouraging words based on scripture and experiences from real Christian women.

I teach Medical Assisting in a local college and I often bring in books from my own library to share with the students. This particular book is just great. Detailed pictures of what is happening with one's heart with different diseases really helped them to learn and understand how important the cardiovascular system is.

Genghis Khan was the first in history to unite the various Central Asian tribes into a single Mongol nation and then set in motion the creation of the largest single empire the world has ever known. As such, he deserves better treatment than is usually accorded him by Hollywood and popular writers who inevitably dwell on Mongol savagery. De Hartog has written a scholarly study, impressively grounded in a rich variety of sources drawn from many countries. Unfortunately, however, the author's style (at least in translation) does not match his erudition. The reader is drowned in detail and proper names which will be unfamiliar to all but the most dedicated Mongol historian. Genghis Khan's armies breached the Great Wall of China, captured Beijing, and crushed all resistance in Afghanistan, Persia and Southern Russia by ruthless massacres and pillage. His armies also invaded Europe. Yet until now no historically reliable book about him has been written for a popular audience. This book analyses how Genghis Khan was able to unite the primitive Mongol tribes of the harsh Siberian steppes and organize them into highly mobile and disciplined troops. It shows how he created a regime so strong that his son was able to extend the conquests after the death of Genghis Khan himself. Leo de Hartog pays particular attention to the little-studied Mongol invasion of Europe and explores Europe's contacts with the great Khan.

A Much-Need Book on Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan was more than a punchlune and formula villain. After spending his first forty years uniting the Mongols, he swept across Asia, toppling large portions of Chinese and Muslim civilization. His followers even invaded Europe and almost reached Italy. He built an empire that allowed trade across Asia at unprecedented levels, with concurrent exchanges of art, philosophy and idea. Yet despite these achievements, modern historians generally give him short shift. Supposedly "World History" classes barely mention Genghis Khan's life. It's as if, from our pedestal atop millenia of modern civilization, we're still a bit frightened by the fact that this horsemilk-drinking barbarian almost overran the entirety of the world's major civilizations.

Leo de Hartog tries to fill this gap with a popular history. Short but thorough, he starts off with an appropriately brief ten-page look at life among the Mongol tribes. Then we learn the meager facts about Genghis Khan's early life, and his fight to unite the Mongols. The bulk of the book covers the invasions of China and Persia, followed by Ogodei's rein and the attack through Russia into central Europe. Hartog spends considerable space of Genghis Khan's personality, analyzing what made him effective as a leader.

On the whole, Hartog has written an effective history. He's thorough, covering the invasions in great detail. He openly admits that parts of the story are not backed by good historical sources, and that ambiguity exists. At the micro level, however, "Genghis Khan: Conqueror of the World" is fairly mediocre. The translator has created sentences that are too words and awkward, word choice is sometimes off, and long lists of people and cities are presented without adequate explanation. Also, I would imagine that most Americans, like myself, know fairly little about the geography of Asia. The small maps at the back aren't enough to make up for this shortfall.

Quite good

This is quite a good book overall. It is easy to follow and understand. If you are looking for a book on Genghis Khan's early life, I would not suggest this book, though. It basically starts at Genghis's conquering. The author talks more about the Khwarazm empire then I think is necessary, but it is interesting in its own way. Also, the book dedicates more on Ogodei than the title suggests.
This book is very informative of the battles and reasons for the battles of Genghis Khan. If you are looking for a book on the military campaigns of Genghis Khan, I would definately suggest this book.

This might be good for large corporations

I'm opening a small business and need information on hiring and managing employees. After reading this book, my knowledge of hiring employees hasn't changed much. This books focuses on the legal issues and paperwork required when dealing with employees. If you are looking for insight on how to hire good workers and how to interview people, find another book.

A very complete guide

The review by Roger E. Herman (December 17, 2001) is very accurate, as Paul has done an exceptional job on covering the aspects of corporate onboarding and separation.

There are many quotes worthy to put into this review and here are a few:

"...employees become disheartened for one of two reasons. They perceive either
(1) a lack of communication with their supervisors and peers or
(2) a lack of recognition or appreciation for their efforts."

"There are three criteria to focus on when identifying high potential hires:
*Longevity
*Progression through the ranks
*Technical skills"

Provides many conceivable discussion scenarios that a manager can/could have with employees, particularly about job offers & recinding them, discipline (verbal & written), poor performance, questions to ask (and not to ask) during the interview process. He mentions the relevant Federal and State employment laws.

I would highly advise anyone that have direct reports to read this book

Terrific Reference Book!

Whether you're a human resources professional or an executive or manager in a company without a human resources department, you are confronted by all sorts of difficult personnel questions. Hiring and firing can be highly complicated subjects. Scary. Unless you have someone you can turn to for reliable advice.
Never fear. Paul Falcone is here! The author of "96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire" and "101 Sample Write-Ups for Documenting Employee Performance Problems" has authored a book that will relieve the stress in your people-management life. Falcone is Director of Employment and Development Paramount Pictures in Hollywood and teaches for UCLA. Here's a resource who knows what he's talking about.
This book is organized into two main sections: Hiring and Firing. Under the Hiring Section, you'll find chapters on the hiring process, recruitment tools, online recruiting, interviewing, and making the final selection. The Firing Section begins with a chapter answering common questions about the performance management and termination process. Next, the reader will learn about progressive discipline, terminations for cause and summary offenses, and reductions-in-force and layoffs.
Through these chapters, Falcone presents 112 vital questions . . . and answers. Each question is addressed with a basic answer, followed by a section titled "Tell Me More." What a wealth of information!
And, as if this weren't enough, the book also includes an appendix with sample policies, agreements, and letters. The comprehensiveness of this section is amazing. A glossary, resource list, and index provide even more value.
